Student in the Anantapur Educational Center

ANANTAPUR EDUCATIONAL CENTRE

This humanitarian project came into being through collaboration between the Rafa Nadal Foundation and the Vicente Ferrer Foundation and our alliance has permitted the building and maintenance of a school for integral education and a tennis training and playing centre with five tennis courts where children can play, learn or train. The number of courts that have been equipped with floodlights, allowing them to be used outside the sunniest, and therefore the hottest, hours of the day.

Work began in this centre in 2010 and since then we have given opportunities for a better future to 210 boys and girls from the district of Anantapur, the largest of the 22 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, considered one of the areas of greatest poverty in the country. The Vicente Ferrer Foundation has spent more than 40 years performing an important task of integral development in the area and constitutes an excellent support for the sports activities that we promote.

The project

In addition to tennis training, the children benefit from our project by receiving extra schooling in English –the possibility to study can often be the most difficult for these participants -, as well as training in IT skills, which is a must these days. This academic aspect, coupled with the tennis training, can improve their education holistically and accompany them in their development, laying the groundwork for better future opportunities.

We also cover the participants’ health and nutritional requirements, so that their basic food and medical needs are satisfied.

Objective

Our training concept, which coincides with that of the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, stems from the belief that the main objective of quality education is to favour the development of mature personalities in boys and girls. In addition to producing a healthy lifestyle, sport and games encourage attitudes of companionship and solidarity in younger children, two very important values for both Foundations, whilst also helping to achieve better social cohesion.

Beneficiaries

The children in daily attendance at the program are aged between 6 and 17 years, and belong to families with few resources and from different castes of Indian society. We are careful to ensure equality in the numbers of boys and girls taking part.
