Fair Play Day: small gestures that build great futures

Every May 19th, Fair Play Day invites us to look at sport from a perspective that goes beyond competition. This year, at the Rafa Nadal Foundation, we want to focus on something more concrete and everyday: small gestures.

Because fair play is not only measured in big moments, but in daily decisions. In returning a doubtful ball, encouraging a teammate who makes a mistake, accepting correction without frustration, or celebrating without belittling an opponent. These are simple, almost invisible actions, yet they hold enormous educational power.

In our projects, this is exactly where we work: in the everyday. We use sport as a safe space where children and adolescents can experience, practice, and truly internalize these learnings through action. We don’t just talk about what values like respect or empathy mean; we create moments and activities where they can put them into practice in real ways.

This approach is key, especially when working with children and youth in vulnerable contexts. For many of them, sport becomes a laboratory for life: a safe place to learn how to manage emotions, live with diversity, overcome frustration, and discover their own abilities.

Fair play, understood from this perspective, stops being an abstract concept and becomes a tool for transformation.

Every gesture counts. Every experience adds up. And little by little, these learnings go beyond the court and extend into other areas of their lives: school, family, and their social environment.

At the Rafa Nadal Foundation, we believe that sport is a powerful educational vehicle. That is why we support each participant in their journey, reinforcing positive attitudes and creating opportunities for them to become active agents of their own development.

This Fair Play Day is an opportunity to remember that big stages are not needed to create impact. A gesture, a decision, an attitude is enough. Because when fair play is lived in small ways, its impact can be enormous.

And it is in these small gestures, repeated day after day, where great futures begin to be built.
