The first fundraising event of the RafaNadal Foundation was held on the 22nd December 2010. Madrid’s ‘Caja Mágica’ was the venue for a charity match between the founding patron of the Foundation, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, with the objective of raising funds to benefit the projects of the Foundation.
The afternoon was full of surprises, amongst them a small concert by David Bisbal before the match commenced. The singer from Almería also wished to take part in our event and demonstrate his most altruistic side. Later on, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer delighted all present with a brilliant match. These afternoon, neither of them won the match since the only winners were the children for whom the Foundation has been working ever since its creation. The match was fully transmitted by TVE’s Channel 1, with special coverage at both national and international levels, allowing over 300 million spectators to view the match live.
After the match ended, we held a Gala Dinner at the Galería de Cristal in the Palace of Cibeles, attended by numerous celebrities and well-known personalities. Julio Iglesias was the star who closed the evening with an exclusive concert, making ours one of the most talked-about social events on the capital city’s Christmas calendar.
It was a very intense day for the players, as well as for our Foundation and for all the sponsors who demonstrated their support of our project, United for Childhood. We were supported by MAPFRE, Banesto, United Postcode Lotteries and the Corporation of the City of Madrid. Several other companies also collaborated, such as Kia, Babolat, Richard Mille, NetJet, Nespresso, San Miguel, Façonnable, Play Station, AC Hotels and the Madrid Tennis Federation.
