On 23rd September 2011, the Fourth Edition of the Only Watch fine watch auction was held in Monaco, organized by Antiquorum Auctioneers, the objective of which was to raise funds to finance research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The event, which was promoted by Luc Pettavino, president of the Muscular Association of Monaco and under the presidency of H.R.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, entailed the participation of the world’s most prestigious watch-makers. They were commissioned to create 40 exclusive, avant-garde watches, which were auctioned amongst collectors and watch-lovers, reaching the amazing figure of 4,563,000 Euros.
The protagonist of the Richard Mille lot was the Tourbillon RM 027, the watch Rafa Nadal displays on his wrist during matches and with which he won the title in Montecarlo. A very exclusive piece, with mechanical, manual movement, weighing less than 20 grams, which was acquired for 510,000 Euros.
Rafa Nadal took charge of personally presenting the watch to Luc Pettavino’s son, Paul, 15 years of age, who day after day struggles against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, also called progressive muscular dystrophy. This disease, which causes rapid degeneration of the muscles and loss of reflexes, affects one out of every 3,500 children.
At the present time, only supporting treatments exist to alleviate this disease, but it is hoped that with actions as praiseworthy as this, youngsters like Paul can be given effective medical treatment in the very near future.
