Collaboration between Aldees Infantils SOS and the Rafa Nadal Foundation has been based on the concept of sport enabling children to feel like persons who act, think, ponder and construct. Sport, in this case, is not the end pursued, but rather, we turn it into an efficient method for achieving the integration and personal growth of the children involved.

The project

Integration and Sport offers children the opportunity to enhance their education through the practice of a wide range of sports and activities; contributing to their personal and social development and also improving their social situation and that of their family. The project, a joint collaboration between the Foundation and SOS Children’s Villages in Barcelona, Granada and Zaragoza, currently benefits 185 children at risk of social exclusion, as well as 123 families.

The Day Centres are classified as Centres for Social Programmes and constitute a community resource for minors and families in need. Programmes and social-educational activities are carried out, which help them to reduce risk indicatorsand avoid the internment of minors or separation from their families.

The “Integration and Sport” Programme comprises actions of a social-educational and technical nature, by way of which we achieve the following objectives:

- To diminish the incidence of the risk factors in children through sport.
- To strengthen the inter-family ties in minors, avoiding situations of abandonment.
- To propose alternatives for leisure and free time, this way attempting to provide them with an integral training.
- To bring young people closer to the resourcesoffered by their environment.
- We contribute to the comprehensive education of participants by implementing measures ranging in type from preventative to direct assistance.
- To develop cross-discipline work in conjunction with the encouragement of education, good habits and behaviour and the resolving of conflicts.
- To develop the sports training process by using structures of a technical, social and educational nature.

Since its implementation, the programme has exceeded its initial objectives, promoting and improving the school performance, health, and family cohesion of participants. However, it is not only the children, the families and educators who are satisfied with the programme, but also social partners and the wider community who have seen an improvement in the neighbourhoods during this period.

The beneficiaries of this programme are children and young people between the ages of 6 and 18 who live in vulnerable social and family environments and at risk of exclusion. The aim is to strengthen family cohesion through physical activity and sports, thus contributing to improvements in wellbeing.
