Rafa Nadal Foundation Center, education and sport

The Rafa Nadal Foundation Center is the Rafa Nadal Foundation’s first own project, established in October 2014 between the neighbourhood of Nou Llevant and La Soledat in Palma de Mallorca. This project is the fruit of the years of experience, work carried out and the results obtained with the projects that we have run since the earliest days of our operations, which are now in a phase of consolidation.

The Centre opened its doors in October 2015 after a first year in which the project had provisionally been carried out in municipal facilities. About 200 boys and girls from socially disadvantaged backgrounds are currently participating in the project.

The Rafa Nadal Foundation Center follows the same concept as other work by the Rafa Nadal Foundation: education through sport, because we believe that sport is a fundamental tool for personal and social integration.

The Project

The Rafa Nadal Foundation Center assists children and young people in one of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Palma de Mallorca, offering them a programme that is complementary to their school education, with sport serving as the main tool and vehicle for fostering values such as camaraderie, respect and effort.

The Centre’s facilities include a number of classrooms, extra tutoring and workshops, a multi-sport court and a dining room for breaks. These installations enable the staff to carry out an integral program aimed at providing the necessary tools for personal and social development in the most complete way possible.

For the day-to-day work of the program, we count on the support of professionals from the Diagram Foundation, an organisation with a great deal of experience in this area.

In this project, the first one belonging to the Rafa Nadal Foundation, we are working in three different areas which are essential to the personal and social development of young people and their families: socio-educational, sports and psychotherapy.

Through the activities carried out in each of these areas, the project pursues the following objectives:

1- To facilitate the social integration of children in a situation of poverty or at risk of social exclusion.
2- To guarantee access to sports and to healthy leisure time. To initiate the children in the practice of different sports disciplines.
3- To provide social and educational support to children in order to facilitate their socialisation and school development.
4- To offer psychological support to children and their families with the aim of fostering change in their personal, group and social environment, and with regard to the basic aspects of their daily life: diet, healthy habits, relationship with the environment, etc.
5- To transmit to young people the values of the Rafa Nadal Foundation and which are inherent in sport, such as the desire to better oneself, effort, camaraderie, respect and trust.

The beneficiaries of this programme are children and young people aged between 6 and 16 years who are in a situation of poverty, at risk of social exclusion, or who have difficulty integrating into society.

The participants of the program are mainly referred to the project through the local authority’s social services, although schools and other entities also serve as possible access routes.
